The Minneapolis VA Health Care System (VAHCS) is a teaching hospital providing a full range of patient care services with state-of-the-art technology, as well as education and research. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Credentialing and Privileging will be completed as a licensed independent practice provider, once practice hour requirements are satisfied with state licensing agency. If practice hours are not satisfied applicant will function under a scope of practice with a collaborating Physician. Preferred Experience: Must have a minimum of a master's degree in nursing/clinical APRN specialist major, and board certification as a NP from a VA-approved certifying body required. 2-3 years of recent experience. Preferred experience in Compensation and Pension Environmental Health is preferred. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. The Minneapolis VA Health Care seeks a full time Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), to serve in the Compensation and Pension Environmental Health Clinic. The nurse practitioner will work closely with the Comp & Pen Section Chief and other health care providers to clinically manage and evaluate Veterans for diseases and health conditions caused by environmental, toxic exposures. The NP will spend most of the time performing disability examinations and environmental health examinations. They will be responsible for the completion of the medical report. These reports are provided to the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) to determine service-connected disability and benefits. The team may include any or all the following team members: primary care physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, psychologists, health psychologists, physical therapists, chiropractors, and other allied healthcare staff. The nurse practitioner will use sound clinical judgment to assess, plan, implement, document, and evaluate care and use the full complement of resources to deliver adequate care and treatment. The care setting is not limited to the clinic visits with the provider, it includes all visit modality types, (telephone triage, virtual visits and other telemedicine visits.) Duties include but may not be limited to the following: Performs physical assessments, engages in therapeutic problem solving, counseling, consultation, and provides independent care management. Provide comprehensive guideline directed evidence-based care to patients with a wide variety of health issues/concerns Obtain health histories, perform physical exams and documents findings in the medical record for military service related-injuries, military service-related illnesses, toxic exposure evaluation examinations, and other administrative exams. Assessment, diagnosis, testing, and documentation of Veteran's VA disability evaluation and environmental hazards exams. Education of patients and families regarding health conditions and veterans' benefits receive treatment. Education and training of VA employees as necessary regarding environmental health-related issues, compensation, and pension benefits. Orders, interprets, and follows up on diagnostic tests Collaborates with physicians and other members of the health care team. Demonstrates professional communication and conduct. Recognizes and supports Suicide Prevention initiatives. Works collaboratively with all levels of health care professional and support staff to facilitate positive employee health outcomes. Independently leads field groups through analysis, needs assessment, and development of revisions to the employee health promotion disease prevention program. Compliance with various Isolation Precautions and Infection Control Guidelines Patient and caregiver education and support. Participates in High Reliability Organization (HRO) Participates in performance improvement initiatives Promotes evidence-based best practices and research based clinical care.
