Tomsich Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Institute (RT-PLMI). RT-PLMI touches virtually every patient at Cleveland Clinic and thousands of patients across the world. From simple blood tests to sophisticated DNA analysis and expert biopsy interpretation, RT-PLMI serves a vital role in diagnosing and monitoring disease. With approximately 1,700 dedicated caregivers processing more than 20 million tests annually, the RT-PLMI laboratories are often cited as one of the largest volume and busiest hospital laboratories in the United States. RT-PLMI also provides pathology and laboratory services to external regional and national clients through our reference laboratory, Cleveland Clinic Laboratories. The Department of Laboratory Medicine has six unique specialty areas within the Department of Laboratory Medicine, including hematopathology, transfusion medicine, microbiology, biochemistry, molecular pathology, and transplant medicine (Allogen Laboratories). These sections provide a thriving and comprehensive subspecialty practice rooted in collaborative relationships with clinical colleagues. The Department’s Staff has extensive experience in research and knowledge development. The Department is an active teaching center with 28 residents as well as fellowships in Transfusion Medicine, Hematopathology, Clinical Microbiology, Molecular Genetic Pathology, and Clinical Biochemistry. Duties and responsibilities of the new Chair will be to provide leadership for the Department, facilitate and develop best in class laboratory diagnostics services, oversight of business review and general operations, department organization, fiduciary matters, quality and safety, recruitment, and retention and mentoring of medical staff, administrators, educators and researchers. The Chair is responsible for enhancing the important academic and research mission of the Department and driving innovation. The ideal candidate for Chair of the Laboratory Medicine Department should hold an MD, DO or MD/PhD and be board certified by the American Board of Pathology. They should be a well-recognized national and international collaborative leader in Laboratory Medicine, have demonstrated strong academic achievement, a reputation for clinical excellence, and be well versed in laboratory operations and finance. The Chair will have ultimate responsibility for the clinical, educational, research and financial success and development of the department. A faculty appointment at a rank commensurate with experience is available at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University.
