The Banner University Medical Center-Tucson campus is seeking an experienced Trauma Registrar/Trauma Data Analyst. Your primary role will be the collection, abstraction and entering of clinical data for all trauma patients admitted to or evaluated by the trauma service. Trauma services is a key department housing trauma program operations necessary to sustain the requirements associated with the State designation and ACS verified trauma centers. You must have advanced education in anatomy and medical terminology and be familiar with ICD 10 coding and knowledgeable with computer use. 2 or more years of coding, abstracting and data management work experience is required. Requires the ability to abstract registry data from the patient's medical/health record. Exceptional data entry and data management skill sets are required. Must be able to work effectively with common office computer software, the Trauma Registry software, the electronic medical records system and databases, spreadsheet and graphical programs. RHIT, RHIA and Coder CPC certification preferred and LPN or RN is preferred. This is a full time, day shift position (Monday through Friday 8A-5P) and will have the opportunity to work remotely 50% of the time (after approx 6 months training period). The hospital's physicians are full-time faculty of the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson. Our specialty services include comprehensive heart and cancer care, advanced neuroscience techniques and a multi-organ transplant program. POSITION SUMMARY This position develops, implements and participates in trauma registry data entry practices that ensure accurate data, timely data entry and timely reports to meet criteria for Level I Trauma Center requirements. Is responsible for the daily collection and management of the trauma registry database. Acts as a member of the multi-disciplinary trauma team to support patient quality and performance improvement initiatives and to submit data to state and national entities. The primary role is the collection, abstraction and entering of clinical data for all trauma patients admitted to or evaluated by the trauma service. CORE FUNCTIONS 1. For all seriously injured trauma victims, collects all required information, reviews multiple medical records, and abstracts basic patient demographics, clinical procedures, clinical and diagnostic results. Enters abstracts and data, maintains, retrieves, and analyzes records related to the trauma patient's history, diagnosis, therapy, and outcome. 2. Using scaling and scoring tools such as ICD-9-CM, Trauma Score, Revised Trauma Score, Abbreviated Injury Score, Injury Severity Score, TRISS and the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) developed by the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM), codes injuries and procedures for the database as required for clinical care, research, benchmarking and accreditation; accurately codes each, using the AIS Abbreviated Injury Scale, ICD-9 and CPT coding tools. Ensures the hospital remains compliant with all standards as they relate to Joint Commission, American College of Surgeons, National Trauma Data Base and Adult Level I accreditation. 3. Maintains the Trauma Registry database in compliance with state regulations and certification requirements. Assists team with documentation and management of the registry database as it relates to clinical research, benchmarking and accreditation. 4. Develops and produces timely reports as requested by administration and/or the American College of Surgeons for accreditation initiatives and re-verification. 5. Works as an integral part of the hospital and trauma quality and performance improvement initiatives. As assigned, maintains agendas, schedules, minutes and integrates information from quality meetings and initiatives into the registry. 6. Works independently under limited supervision. This position functions at assigned facility, and has no budgetary responsibilities. Internal and external customers are: physicians, clinical staff, facility employees, patients, family members, other facilities, Trauma data registrars at other facilities, community members. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Requires a level of education equivalent to that of a Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) or certified coder, including advanced education in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. Must have a level of experience and ability in coding, abstracting and data management as normally acquired over two or more years of clinical and/or experience in a coding or clinical data management position. Requires the ability to interpret and comprehend information contained within the patient's medical record and to find all ancillary information required by the Trauma Registry. Requires the ability to abstract registry data from the patient's medical/health record using the above standard setters with regard to abstracting and coding procedures. Must have excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to prioritize multiple work projects and tasks. Exceptional data entry and data management skill sets are required. Must be able to work effectively with common office computer software, the Trauma Registry software, the electronic medical records system and databases, spreadsheet and graphical programs. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Registered Health Information Technologist or Registered Health Information Administrator certification (RHIT or RHIA) Certified specialist Trauma Registry (CSTR) preferred. LPN or RN preferred. Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
