Do you enjoy digging into complex, multi-disciplinary challenges and building software that meets those challenges? Are you passionate about cutting-edge technology and developing methods for deploying those techniques at scale? In this role, you will be an authority on design and architecture. You will be expected to analyze design choices, explain architecture principles, make recommendations, and translate them into implementation decisions. You will be expected to make tradeoffs between architecture cleanliness, time to delivery, maintainability and costs of various solution choices. Key Functions Lead the engineering team in evolving the architecture and maintaining a high-quality, well-architected codebase aligned with broader Program goals and strategy Collaborate with project and product management, Program leadership and other engineering managers to understand, build, maintain, and support the long-term technological product roadmap, including internal and external features Set the overall strategic technological vision for the product and help define the incremental path to get there Evaluate existing architectural choices and decisions, and formulating alternatives where appropriate Ensure that the new solutions fit into the existing enterprise architecture from the functional, technical, user and non-functional perspectives such as security and performance Assess the performance characteristics, security implications, and difficulty or ease of implementing proposed architecture, with ease of maintenance in mind Enforce technical design reviews, with a focus on hard technical artifacts such as ER diagrams, time-sequence diagrams, truth tables, pseudocode, etc. Seek to understand the business needs and operational constraints in addition to the technical challenges necessary for solving problems Research new development tools, libraries, methodologies and technologies Create appropriate documentation, flowcharts, diagrams, code comments, etc. Collect, analyze and summarize development and service issues to provide information and remediation steps Responsible for continually improving software design best practices, tools, technologies and templates Technical Capabilities Architect applications and integrations across products and institutions Coordinate with security stakeholders on documentation and review of new implementations, ensuring adherence to FISMA moderate security protocols. Ensure applications and integrations are in compliance with the Program's stated privacy requirements. Collaborated with application teams across the enterprise to design APIs and other common interfaces to support the clean flow of data between systems. Continuously improve change management and monitoring processes to improve application and integration quality. Implemented automated testing and continuous integration systems to ensure stability of application interoperability. Develop maintainable, performant, and secure applications Selected technology stacks based upon analysis of best fit for use case, long-term support, expertise of staff, and prevalence of skillset in hiring pool. Ensured that the new solutions fit into the existing enterprise architecture from the functional, technical, user and non-functional perspectives such as security and performance. Reviewed emerging technologies and new cloud offerings, employing them where existing architectures would realize significant benefit. Assessed the performance characteristics, security implications, and difficulty or ease of implementing architectural plans, with ease of maintenance in mind. Designed monitoring and alerting for applications and systems to provide performance characteristics and aid in troubleshooting. Create appropriate documentation, flowcharts, diagrams, code comments, etc. Collect, analyze and summarize development and service issues to provide information and remediation steps Collaborate with project management and stakeholders to implement long-term roadmaps and respond quickly to emergent needs Lead the engineering team in evolving the architecture and maintaining a high-quality, well-architected codebase aligned with broader Program goals and strategy Attended regular meetings with PMs, product owners, and high-level stakeholders to understand busines goals at all levels, providing input and recommendations on application integrations and dataflows. Set the overall strategic technological vision for the product and helped define the incremental path to get there. Ensure that new solutions fit into the existing enterprise architecture from the functional, technical, user and non-functional perspectives such as security and performance Developed SOPs to fast-track urgent requests while staying on target with long-term goals. Employed Agile methodologies to elicit continuous feedback from stakeholders and keep the technical solutions aligned with the product vision. Lead, mentor, and grow technical teams. Work with the team to continuously improve their technical skills and capabilities. Led regular code reviews and retrospectives, guiding technical staff along a path of continual growth and improvement. Developed and implemented best practices, standards, and procedures. Assisted team members in debugging and resolving technical blockers. Participated in performance reviews of technical staff, providing insight to management on where to apply positive reinforcement, and pointing out opportunities for improvement. Participated in the hiring process of new team members, evaluating talent, knowledge, and culture fit. Experience Experience and comfort with ambiguity and rapid changes common in early-stage product development 7-10 years' experience working in industry with technical teams, with the majority of time as an individual contributor Understanding of and participation in a well-defined software development lifecycle Prior experience with product architecture where a blend of strategic vision and tactical pragmatism are required for success. Solid understanding of Computer Science fundamentals especially in data structures and algorithms.
